Start with the correct instructions, the ones above are for winswitch,

As per the page linked to above:
For x264 and vpx support, you should install:
apt-get install libx264-dev libvpx-dev libswscale-dev libavcodec-dev
That said..

Use the binary packages we provide, it will save you a lot of grief.
If you insist on building from source, and since you are on a
distribution (Ubuntu Precise) with known unfixable problems with libav,
build without x264 or libav:
./setup.py --without-x264 --without-dec_avcodec
Bearing in mind that xpra is an order of magnitude more efficient with
x264 enabled.. I can only suggest you use a more up to date distro.
