There is a slightly simpler way if you don't mind using ssh:

xpra start ssh:username at HOST:DISPLAY --start-child=xterm

Is 'xterm' even installed on the server?
Is the xpra tray menu available? (if so, look at Session Info)

If it's connected and not showing you any errors, it probably is working
already.
