I remember when I tried xdummy I had this issue, so I thought I gave up on
xdummy (maybe it's still being used?)

Yes, it's an issue.

I tested with latest emacs.  Not a disaster, but not good.

Then I tried konsole.  The font is submicroscopic and not readable by any
human.
